2022 Weddings – Themes and Dreams

Planning a wedding? Congratulations on your upcoming nuptials! Well done, you are clearly winning at love.

First things first. Wedding planning can be a tad stressful, so it’s important to have a good support team in place. Gather your people, the very best ones, and don’t be afraid to delegate. In the early days of planning logistics seem daunting – guest lists, managing RSVPs, negotiating seating plans, deciding whether or not to invite Great Aunt Mildred. The event design is the juicy part where you get to leave spreadsheets behind for a moment and dream. They call this ‘Your Big Day’ for a reason, so get those creative juices flowing and remember, this part is supposed to be fun!

The Parents at the Palliser Hotel, 1958

Weddings in Calgary have changed so much over the years. Think back to your parents’ wedding photos for a moment. They probably look a lot like our parents’ wedding photos! Lucky for us it’s 2022 and in the world of modern weddings love rules and (just about) anything is possible.

Wedding trends in Alberta come and go quickly and jumping on the wrong bandwagon can make your big event (as well as your videos, photos, and memories) look dated rather quickly. Think about who you are, what you’re passionate about and what you value. The only rule that matters in the wild world of wedding planning is Hamlet’s –, ‘to thine own self be true’.

The Year of Theming

Everyone has a colour palette, most have favourite blooms and maybe even an idea about what kind of dress code and bouquet they want. So, why not go all the way and plan the ultimate theme party?

We’ve all been challenged by masking, distancing and isolation. Rarely has there been a time in history when gatherings have garnered more anticipation. As we gradually shift our mindsets from introspection to intermingling, it is with a sense of cautious optimism. Like, we are ready as a collective to shed our yoga pants in favour of sequins. It’s time to get some glam on. Right?

How perfect then, to start thinking about dramatic, indulgent, over the top themed parties as wedding season approaches. Imagine your favourite people gathering for a glamourous evening paying tribute to ‘Old Hollywood’. Elegant hairdos, long silk gloves, black tails, a vintage vehicle or two, and some over the top feather décor. Or, what about a dark and mysterious ‘Goth’ wedding? Truly romantic by nature. Picture rich hues, lacy trim, and an edgy, Victorian vibe. Wondering what we’re expecting to see a lot of in 2022? Unabashedly steamy Bridgerton events, with scintillating, modern twists.

Whether inspired by film, novels, or television – we welcome the uniqueness of the themed wedding trend. Brides and grooms are seizing the opportunity to infuse their personalities and passions into the production of unexpected and unforgettable events. Give your guests a reason to dig into character research, hunt for vintage finds, and get dressed up. (Waaaaay up. Like, totally over-the-top UP!)

It’s true, a themed wedding isn’t going to be for everyone. There are those among us who will always try to dodge the limelight and leave space at centre stage for others. But we’ve noticed an unbridled enthusiasm for the Avant Garde this year. A thirst for freedom. A longing for expression. A renewed desire to mark moments monumentally. And maybe, just maybe, this is the way to do it.

To Theme or Not To Theme

Whether you are curating a themed event or looking forward to a stroll down the aisle at the closest church followed by brunch at the Country Club, just like your folks did before you – the following trends will give you more than a few things to consider as you prepare for your big day.

Trends and Finishing Touches

Custom Neon

We’ve all seen these signs serving as ceremony backdrops, providing the focal point on a photo wall, or signalling the way to the treat table. They aren’t new, that’s for sure. They are fun though, and bright, easy to personalize and beautifully photogenic! We have some illuminating sign shops here in YYC (Topmade Plastics & Neon Signs Ltd.) or you’re sure to find some affordable options online (think Esty).

Accent Walls

You’ve got one in your house, why not install one at your wedding? An accent wall is the perfect place to set the tone while creating a unique photo op. Pro Tip: Use temporary wallpaper, plants or flowers – express yourself! With the right materials it can be easy to install and cost effective.

Intense Hues

Gone are the delicate days of muted pastels and softened hues. Today’s palettes include everything from neon brights to intense pinks, dramatic blues, and vibrant oranges. The impact is undeniable – fresh, fun, and fabulous. Pro Tip: A bright, intense palette pops beautifully in a historic building or industrial space where the contrast is dramatic.

Hanging Florals

Instead of crowding tables and blocking views with flowers and candles, elevate your event decor by suspending florals from the ceiling. Clearing up table space makes the meal much easier to enjoy. Hanging arrangements in a venue like the Hemingway Room at the Commons really highlights ceiling height and architectural details. Pro Tip: combine stunning chandeliers with hanging florals for romantic drama.

Arches and Altars

It’s important to create focal points in large venues where ceiling heights and wide-open spaces can feel overwhelming. It’s true, you’ll be the focal point, but it doesn’t hurt for a work of art to have a beautiful frame. Pro Tip: Design something stable but portable, so it can move from the ceremony to reception with ease for elegant continuity.
